About Ian

Ian is a graduate of the Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts in London and has a career spanning more than 25 years in theatre, film, TV, and pedagogy. Throughout his journey he has established himself as a highly regarded educator, choreographer, and movement director. Noteworthy projects include ‘The Play What I Wrote’, with Tom Hiddleston directed by Sean Foyle, Emma Rice’s rendition of ‘Brief Encounter’, Tim Firth’s official Take That Musical ‘Greatest Days, and Isobel McArthur’s 2023 Oliver award-winning play, ‘Pride and Prejudice* (Sort of)’, among others.

A pivotal point in Ian’s career unfolded while choreographing the national tour of Simon Beaufoy’s award-winning play ‘The Full Monty’ in 2014. Recognising the need for a more nuanced and supportive approach when handling scenes involving intimacy and nudity, Ian took the initiative to create his own rehearsal protocols, unknowingly to him at the time, doing the role now known as an intimacy director. In subsequent years, Ian closely monitored the industry’s evolving landscape, identifying a compelling need for change.
He pursued formal training with Intimacy on Set under the guidance of intimacy practitioner Ita O’Brian. In 2022, Ian successfully completed his official training with Intimacy on Set, equipping him to actively serve as an intimacy director/coordinator and educator, securing membership with BecTU intimacy branch.
